Auditory Processing Disorder in the Educational Setting

Auditory processing disorder affects a significant number of children in our school systems. It is estimated that 43% of kids with learning disabilities have an APD. This presentation will address risk factors, symptoms, testing, therapy, and appropriate accommodations for students with auditory processing disorder with and without hearing loss in the school setting.

Meet Your Instructors

Dr. Rachel Cohen

Dr. Rachel Cohen is an accomplished audiologist who earned her Doctorate of Audiology degree from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. in 2005. She focuses on Auditory Processing Disorders (APD) and is certified as a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist Auditory Verbal Educator (LSLS AVEd). Additionally, Dr. Cohen is certified as an IEP Advocate, offering guidance to families navigating the education system. Dr. Cohen owns ListenHEAR, a private practice located in SW Florida that provides comprehensive APD evaluations and APD therapy services, both in person and online, to clients in Florida and Pennsylvania. She also works with school districts across Florida to offer crucial Educational Audiology, LSLS, and APD services to students. Her dedication to the field has been recognized through awards such as the State Clinical Achievement Award for Florida by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in 2019. Dr. Cohen is also the Educational Audiology Association state representative for Florida and is passionate about advocating for students with APD and hearing loss in the schools.

Dr. Megan Thomas

Dr. Megan Thomas graduated from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2012 with a clinical doctorate in Audiology. She completed her 4th year clinical rotation at the internationally recognized center for hearing and research, Boys Town National Research Center and was hired on as a clinical audiologist following graduation. Dr. Thomas eventually split her time between the clinic and vestibular research lab. In 2017, Dr. Thomas moved her family to Columbia, SC to start a position in the school district as an educational audiologist. During that time a need for auditory processing evaluation and therapy was evident. In addition to her doctoral education, Dr. Thomas has completed Master Courses in Auditory Processing Disorder Evaluation and Therapy from the Auditory Processing Institute. Dr. Thomas is currently a Masgutova Neurosensorirmotor Integration core in training, using knowledge of primary reflex integration to improve non-classical auditory pathways. Dr. Thomas is passionate about helping young kids through adults hear better by improving their auditory processing abilities
