This session will introduce participants to the Deaf Reading Rope, a meta-analysis of D/HH reading research that uses the Science of Reading framework as a lens to understand components of reading instruction for D/HH students who use ASL and English. Participants will reflect on their own reading instructional practices.

Meet your Instructor

Dr. Nathan Harrison

Instructor Nathan Harrison

Dr. Nathan E. Harrison is a lecturer in the Department of Deaf Education at the Rochester Institute of Technology, focusing on digital teaching and learning, Deaf/Hard of Hearing pedagogy, bilingual instruction, and Deaf Educational Leadership. He began his career as a math teacher at the New Mexico School for the Deaf, later serving as Assistant Principal. He earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of New Mexico. Nathan held leadership roles at the Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind, including Assistant Director at JMS, Curriculum Director for USD, and Director of the Elizabeth DeLong School of the Deaf. In 2024, he transitioned to higher education to support educator preparation and develop a Deaf Educational Leadership program. Originally from Vernal, UT, Nathan discovered his passion for Deaf education at Utah State University. He is also a proud husband to Mackenzie and father to three children.
